NEWSLETTER APRIL, MAY, JUNE 2010 Outdoor Meetings: Strong footwear and waterproof clothing is essential on all walks. Please notify the leaders if you intend to go. (This is important as very occasionally outdoor meetings have to be cancelled or meeting places changed). Indoor Meetings are held at Wolverhampton Cricket Club, Danescourt Road, Tettenhall, Wolverhampton, WV6 9BJ, on alternate Mondays from January to March and September to November, at 7.30 pm. A small charge of £1 is made on entry towards the Society's funds, including the cost of speaker. Saturday 10 April (NOTE: THIS IS A CHANGE FROM SUNDAY 11 APRIL) - Much Wenlock area - Leaders: Marj and Ken Horton (Tel 01952 727439) Start time: 10.30 am. Meeting place: Rossmore, 2 Kingswood Close, Much Wenlock. Directions: From Bridgnorth by-pass continue on A458 to Much Wenlock. At Gaskell Arms Hotel take the 2nd right turn (A4169 to Ironbridge/Telford. In 300 metres take right turn (opposite Travis Perkins) into Queen Street. Kingswood Close is 1st on left. (Note: parking is limited in Kingswood Close so please park in Queen Street or King Street.) Distance of walk: 5 miles approx. Terrain: Slow, easy walk with good views. Refreshments: Birng a packed lunch. Afternoon tea at Rossmore at end of walk. Finishing time: 3 pm. Saturday 24 April - Lem Hill - Leaders: Wenda Janes (Tel 01299 402406) and Josette Pearn Start time: 10.30 am. Meeting place: OS 719752. Directions: A4117 Cleobury Mortimer to Bewdley & Kidderminster. "Horse & Jockey" pub (probably closed up) on left, about 3 miles E.S.E. of Cleobury Mortimer. Distance of walk: About 2 1/2 miles. Terrain: One permanently muddy path. One short uphill, taken slowly. Varied interest, woodland and open. Should be good for birds and spring flowers. Signed trails and gentle enjoyment of the forest. Refreshments: Bring something for coffee stop. Optional extra is lunch at pub (unlikely due to present closure) or sustenance at Wyre Forest Visitor Centre. Finishing time: 12.30 - 1 pm, depending on nature interest. Saturday 1 May - Baggeridge and Himley - Leader: Andrew Milligan (Tel 01902763657) Start time: 10 am. Meeting place: Battlefield Lane, Wombourne outside the Red Lion Inn. Directions: GR LR139/Exp219 880932. Distance of walk: 4 miles at most. Terrain: Following our 2 field trips here last year which proved so popular we are returning at a different time of the year. This time the wild garlic and bluebells should be flowering in profusion. Refreshments: Bring your own. The Red Lion at Wombourne is available after the meeting for lunch if you wish. Finishing time: 12.30 - 1 pm. Saturday 8 May - Arley - Leaders: Alan and Stella Clowes (Tel 01902 895791 mobile 07971477538) Start time: 10.30 am. Meeting place: Arley Riverside Car Park (£1 all day). Directions: Take A442 Bridgnorth to Kidderminster Road. At Shatterford Village turn down lane to Upper Arley. 1 3/4 miles. Continue down until river and car park on left hand side. Distance of walk: 4 or 5 miles depending on weather. Terrain: Due to recent poor weather have not recently walked the area but we have a choice of at least 4 walks all of which take in the River Severn, woodland and open country. Usually there is plenty of interest for those who appreciate plant and bird life. Generally flat with one or two gentle climbs and not many stiles. Refreshments: Take a drink and snack to suit. Three public houses on A442 within 5-10 minutes of car park, all of which serve meals/snacks. Finishing time: 1.30 - 2 pm. Saturday 22 May - Wom Brook - Leader: Anita Ferguson (Tel 01902 892187 mobile 07796577613 only for use on day of meeting) Start time: 1.30 pm. Meeting place: Outside the Red Lion pub by Rushford Bridge off A449. Directions: SO 879 932. Distance of walk: 3 1/2 miles. Terrain: Butterflies, bumblebees, wide variety of birds and watervole (with luck!!). Refreshments: Bring own if required. Finishing time: 4 pm. Saturday 29 May - Hampton Loade - Leader: Olly Cadman (Tel 01902 897964 mobile 07763 777326) Start time: 10.30 am. Meeting place: Severn Valley Country Park, Alveley. Directions: A442 from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster. Turn right in Alveley. Up to T junction. Turn left, then right turn down to Country Park (narrow lane) signposted. Distance of walk: 5 1/2 miles approx. Terrain: Steep bank from river back up to Visitors' Centre. Will be taken very slowly. Refreshments: Bring your own drinks and lunch (carried). Pub may be open at lunch time for hot drinks. Finishing time: 3.30 pm. Saturday 5 June - Pattingham - Leaders: Robin and Mair Stuttard (Tel 01902 700096 mobile 07779 557253) Start time: 10.30 am. Meeting place: Pattingham Village Hall. Directions: SO822991. Distance of walk: 6 miles. Terrain: Possible to shorten for those who find 6 miles too far. Refreshments: Lunch to be carried. Finishing time: 2.30 pm onwards depending on plants found. Tuesday 8 - Friday 11 June - Tanat Valley Holiday - Organisers: Arthur Tyerman (Tel No 01691 780094) and Anne Daly (Tel No 01384 372399) Full information regarding this holiday has been provided in previous newsletters and circulated at indoor meetings. However, if you would like further information, please contact the leaders direct. Saturday, 26 June - Coffee morning - Organiser: Val Price, 4 Lloyd Road, Tettenhall, Wolverhampton, WV6 9AU (Tel No 01902 752727) Start time: 10.30 am. Meeting place: Val's home. Directions: Consult W'ton A-Z. Distance of walk: Around Val's garden. Terrain: Beautiful. Refreshments: Tea, coffee and biscuits provided. Finishing time: About 12 noon. Once againVal has kindly offered to host our summer coffee morning for which a small charge of £1.50, to go towards the Society's funds, will be made at the door. Do come and enjoy a chat and hopefully the sun will be shining. There will be a bring and buy table, and plants and home-baked goodies for sale so please bring as many donations as you can. (The plants and home-cooked goodies are always especially popular!). Sunday 27 June - Ironbridge - Leader: Margot Manuel (Tel 01952 884049) Start time: 10 am. Meeting place: Station car park. Directions: Explorer 242/672032. Distance of walk: 6 miles. Terrain: One hill, up to Rotunda which will be taken slowly, then round valley. Refreshments: Bring a packed lunch. Welcome to go back to Margot's cottage afterwards for cup of tea and piece of cake. Finishing time: 2 - 2.30 pm approx. Saturday 10 July - Corvedale - Leader: Brian Jones (Tel No 01902 850347 mobile 07802754556) Start time: 11 am. Meeting place: Munslow Church. GF521876. Directions: Munslow is on the B4368 Bridgnorth to Craven Arms road about 11 miles beyond Morville. Turn right in Munslow and park by the parish church. Distance of walk: 5 miles. Terrain: A delightful upland walk with views over two valleys. Good paths. Gentle inclines. Muddy in parts. Refreshments: Bring a packed lunch. Finishing time: 3.30 pm. FORWARD PLANNING Tuesday 20 July 2010 - Joint Coach Trip with WulfrunWalkers to the Royal Welsh Show, Builth Wells - Organiser: Pat Newill (of WulfrunWalkers) - Tel No 01902 762332) Pick up point: Tettenhall Green Time: 8.30 am prompt. Parking: Tettenhall College Car Park. Return from Show: 5 pm. Arrive back Tettenhall: Approx 7.30 pm. Cost: £34 based on 30 attending. Refreshments: Food available at Show or bring a picnic. If you would like to go please complete the attached form and return to Pat with cheque as soon as possible. Also - if you are going please keep a note of the arrangements above.
